1. This course will be taught by Assistant Research Fellow Chang Rui-Sheng, who is also an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Aquaculture. In addition to lectures on professional knowledge, the course will incorporate hands-on observation of algae under a microscope and in their natural environment, allowing learners to visualize and solidify their understanding of theoretical foundations and practical applications, thereby gaining a deeper comprehension of algae.
2. Algae can be described as a group of organisms with the most diverse variations in size, color, and lifestyle, truly earning the title of "cross-boundary" masters. They are classified into different biological kingdoms. Even today, with the extensive use of molecular biological data in species classification, there remains considerable uncertainty in the classification of algae. Furthermore, the diverse applications of algae in various research fields in the 21st century, such as food and nutrition, feed and fertilizer, chemical products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, ecological environments, marine ranching, and even global warming, biofuels, green buildings, and bioplastics, all offer materials for development and research. Despite the widespread use of algae, knowledge about them has not yet become widespread in our lives. Many people may not even have seen what common kelp looks like. This course will begin by discussing the value of algae and gradually introduce this group of organisms that are closely related to our lives.
